Access

Access is a database system that gives the user more control over sets of data than Excel can provide. It is capable is of establishing relationships between information stored in different tables within the same database. It is important to plan what fields will be used in the tables within the database. Each record must share consistent field-types in order for the database to recognize the relationships.

Access could easily be used in my personal life. One great way to use it would be to establish an address book. I could then create tables that include my relationship information relating to that person so I have a quick way to find professional references when needed.

Access is easily used in the work environment. One way I could use it would be to keep an inventory of supplies. It could include information about the supplies themselves, and also information about which department/staff use each type of supplies. You could also keep client information or employee information within an Access database.

Before the next class, I will complete a tweet about Access. I will also begin the Access project and update my OneNote Notebook.

Podcasting and Audacity

Skype is a program/service that allows phone and video calls to be made to anyone with an internet connection and access to the program. The service used to place calls is a voice over Internet protocol.Once you create a log-in and find the contacts you wish to call, simply add them to your contacts and you will be able to place a call. It is possible to make a voice only call or a video call. You can also share files and screen views right in the program.

I have never used Skype personally. Using the program in OAD 220 is the first time I have ever used the service. It is very similar to Facetime, which is Apple's program to place voice and video calls.

Skype is great for use in business because so many people have access to the Internet. It allows for people to make calls around the globe for free. It is also great because you can meet virtually with someone and be able to see them and their computer screen. It is a great alternative to meeting face to face. The ability too share files during a business call is also very helpful.

Before next class, I will not get much done, since I am sitting in the next class right now. I did complete a 3-5 minute podcast about Bonnaroo and uploaded it to Blackboard.

Social media is a great way to connect, whether is it personally or professionally. Just remember that posting personally CAN affect you professionally. With Facebook recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, most people are fully aware how to avoid a social media faux pas. As long as you can avoid posting drunk selfies or complaining about your awful boss, it is easy to enjoy social media in both aspects of your life.

Social media can be used academically to stay connected with college events and classmates. I have also had to blog for classes in the past. Personally, I am almost always connected to some type of social media. I am most frequently on reddit, which is a social news and entertainment website. I am also on Facebook and Twitter, just not as frequently. Often, people who view social media sites but never contribute are called "lurkers" and I most certainly spend most of my time lurking on Facebook.

Professionally, social media can be a great way to connect with companies you may be interested in working for. Watch for companies expanding or moving locations to find out when a good time to apply might be. You also can often get a feel for the company's atmosphere. You might even end up getting paid to use social media for a company. At the newspaper I work at, we specifically have a social media correspondent. Many companies are connected to their customers through Facebook and Twitter, which helps establish positive relationships. I know I have become more brand loyal to some of my favorite companies just because of their relationship with their followers.

Before next class I will finish updating my LinkedIn profile and prepare for a profession photo to be taken. I will also have to finish updating my OneNote notebook to include information on social networking.
